Ministers have admitted the South West is lagging behind other regions as they announced an unexpected rise in unemployment.

New figures showed that almost 450 more people were on jobless benefits in Bristol last month than in June. Across the wider greater Bristol area, the total went up from 19,604 to 20,429.

THE Bristol community has joined police in condemning the “disgusting” vandalism, looting and disorder that has swept across the city.

The damage caused Tuesday morning may not have been on the scale of the Stokes Croft riots in April, but it has attracted disgust in equal measure.

EXPENSES claims for MPs in the Bristol area topped £1million last year, it has been revealed.

But across the country there was a sharp drop in claims as tighter restrictions and fear of a public backlash after the 2009 expenses scandal took hold.

New figures released by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa), set up in the wake of the scandal, show MPs’ claims from after May’s General Election up until March 31.

As part of its forthcoming Free Range Kids campaign, Sustrans is calling on MPs across the UK are being asked to sign an Early Day Motion.

BRISTOL East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy is urging people to protest against proposed reforms of the National Health Service.

The deadline for comments on the Department of Health’s website is the end of today. (Tuesday, May 31)

Ms McCarthy said she had received “an almost unprecedented” number of letters and emails from hundreds of constituents who were deeply concerned that the Government’s reforms would be disastrous for the NHS and lead to privatisation.

In April, Ms McCarthy wrote to the Prime Minister and his deputy on the issue. She said people regarded the NHS as a national service, provided on the basis of need – not on the ability to pay or what generates the most profit.
