THE Government has held out hope to motorists that the long-discussed plans for a link road to connect the M4 and the Avon Ring Road could be revived.

Transport Minister Norman Baker told MPs there was no way it could happen in the current spending round but encouraged them to get campaigning in preparation for the next transport funding settlement in 2015.

Kingswood Conservative MP Chris Skidmore, who secured a Parliamentary debate on the issue at Westminster Hall yesterday, insisted “the need for transport infrastructure is greater than ever before” around Emersons Green.

As well as the burgeoning population, which is set to expand by a further 3,000 after the creation of a new housing estate, the development of the Bristol Science Park means the area will be a magnet for international investors.

“Currently corporate inward investors from across the globe are considering investing in the Bristol and Bath Science Park,” Mr Skidmore said. “For international companies, transport links to the Science Park are vital, particularly to Heathrow. “Above all, they can see visiting the Science Park that the M4 is but a stone’s throw away.”

Mr Baker said the road had not been ruled out indefinitely but campaigners would need to address the conclusions of a report carried out by government officials in 2006 that said the link road was not needed.
