Thousands of disabled people, their families and supporters marched to the Houses of Parliament yesterday to protest against the Government’s cuts to disability benefits and the public services that disabled people depend upon.
The protest was organised by the UK Disabled People’s Council with major disability organisations in order to raise awareness of the significant impact of the Government’s cuts on disabled people.
Last week the Prime Minister, David Cameron, was criticised for failing to meet with Bristol’s disability campaigners.
Ms McCarthy said: “It is clear that this Government has no idea of the stress and hardship that it is causing people with disabilities and chronic illnesses and their carers.
“The disability groups who have come from Bristol to protest at Parliament feel the Government is not listening and has failed to understand the unique challenges they face on a daily basis.
“I fully back their cause and I would urge Government Ministers to meet with Hardest Hit Campaign and seriously reconsider the harsh and irresponsible cuts that will hit disabled people the hardest.”
