Bristol’S ongoing primary schools crisis is due to be debated in Parliament tomorrow, after Bristol East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy won permission for a special debate.
During the debate, Ms McCarthy will urge the Department for Education to treat Bristol as a “special case” by stepping in and providing emergency funding to ease the chronic shortage of places.

Bristol City Council’s Lib Dem leader Barbara Janke has said sorry for not making clear in an approach to the Government that the shortage of primary school places is affecting the whole of the city.
The apology came in response to a complaint from Labour MP Dawn Primarolo, who accused Mrs Janke of ignoring the problems in south Bristol

A review is starting this month to try to improve the way parents are dealt with by Bristol City Council when they apply for primary school places for their children.
Over the past few years, many people have said problems getting information about admissions have created extra stress at an already anxious time.

England’s biggest free school will open in north west Bristol next month.
On Friday Education Secretary Michael Gove signed a funding agreement with the Bristol Free School Trust for the permanent establishment of the new secondary school.

MORE than 35 pupils are suspended from schools in the Bristol area each day, new figures reveal.
Hundreds of students are excluded for assaulting staff, racist abuse and drug and alcohol offences.

THE government’s policy of getting schools to convert to academies is costing far more than planned, says the Lib Dem councillor in charge of Bristol’s children and young people’s services.
Clare Campion-Smith says a dash for cash is now under way, in which heads and governors are rushing to apply – not necessarily because they want to escape local authority control, but because it means extra funds from Whitehall at a time when spending is tight.

A PETITION has been launched by parents to help Bristol City Council persuade the Government to hand over more money to provide new primary schools.
The city has one of the fastest-growing child populations outside London and needs to provide at least 3,000 extra school places by 2014.

BRISTOL Free School is considering making Brentry its permanent base rather than moving to the former St Ursula’s site in Westbury-on-Trym.
The change is prompted by the Department for Education, which says the costs of the old private school building would be significantly higher than those for the school’s temporary base in former Government offices.

COUNCILLORS have approved the scrapping of free transport for children attending faith schools, starting next year.
The city council’s ruling cabinet has recommended phasing out the service from September 2012, so those who currently use it will still be able to for the next school year.

ANGRY homecare workers in Bristol had a showdown meeting with council leader Barbara Janke over fears they will lose their jobs.
They claim the Liberal Democrat- run council has broken promises over protecting the homecare service, which supports the elderly and the infirm so they can continue living in their own homes.
At a meeting in the Council House on Tuesday, Mrs Janke answered questions from them about their jobs and the future of the service.
